Renate Chasman and colleague Kenneth Green developed the first electron storage ring optimized for the brightness of the synchrotron radiation produced. Their elegant design was the basis for the two storage rings at the BNLNational Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), and other synchrotrons around the world. Sadly, both inspired scientists died before the light was turned on at the NSLS.
