Schmidt Science Fellow |
Schmidt Science Fellows undertake a 12-24 month postdoctoral placement worth $110000. This placement commences after a Fellow successfully completes his or her PhD in the natural sciences, computing, engineering or mathematics. Fellows’ placements will represent a significant disciplinary pivot from their PhD topic and are central to the program’s aim to foster greater interdisciplinarity. All placements are with world-leading scientific leaders and internationally-renowned labs. The program works with Fellows after selection to identify and secure a placement that will best achieve their scientific pivot. We work with each placement host to ensure Fellows benefit from a stimulating, challenging, and rewarding environment.

Hans Gunter Mecking Scholarship |
Hans Gunter Mecking was one of those people in the green industry who, if you knew him, you knew he was salt of the earth. Gunter knew the meaning of hard work and valued the relationships he built over a lifetime working side by side growers. After working for his family’s business in Germany, Gunter travelled to Canada where he developed a peat bog and peat moss business. Gunter had an impeccable reputation and his commitment to honesty and custom solutions for each and every one of his customers was well known.
In 2019, his friends and family banded together to established the Gunter Mecking Memorial Scholarship, benefitting green industry students who aspire to the same qualities that made Gunter so special: hard work, honesty, and commitment to the industry.

Mugget Growers of America (MGA) Scholarship |
What is a Mugget? An informal group called the Mugget Growers of America (MGA) began in 1981 as a social, educational and fundraising group. Each year MGA participants meet at the American Nursery & Landscape Association’s (ANLA) Management Clinic to discuss important plant issues regarding the development of a new plant called “Mugget”. In addition to their discussions many of the MGA members make contributions during their meeting to the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), the research affiliate of ANLA. Contributions are made in support of HRI’s research and scholarship activities.
MGA members understand the importance of having qualified and quality professionals within the green industry. The MGA group decided that proceeds from Mugget events will be made in support of student scholarships. This is how the Mugget Scholarship was created. Each year, as the fund grows a student scholarship will be awarded. Mugget supporters hope to help aspiring students from across the country obtain a degree in horticulture with this scholarship.

International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) |
The International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) funds several Merit Scholarships to support university, technical college, and other post-secondary education. The scholarship fund has been established to assist the further education of Canadian and U.S.A. students connected to the Pacific halibut fishery and its industry. Generally, a single new scholarship valued at US$4,000 per year is awarded every two years. The scholarships are renewable annually for the normal four-year period of undergraduate education, subject to maintenance of satisfactory academic performance. A selection panel of industry and Commission representatives reviews applications and determines recipients based on academic qualifications, career goals, and relationship to the Pacific halibut industry.
