The ISPS Survey Research Fund supports research projects that advance survey methodology (design or analysis) or pursue novel social science research questions through survey data.
Survey design
The ISPS Survey Research Fund supports research projects that advance survey methodology (design or analysis) or pursue novel social science research questions through survey data. Examples of such scholarship include, but are by no means limited to, the use or validation of new measurement techniques or analytical methods, investigation of improvements in questionnaire design or sampling, novel approaches to, or uses of, survey data merged with other data, strategies for surveying population groups that are challenging to study, using new technology to obtain survey responses or obtain passive measurements of individual-level variables, or introduction of survey research strategies to domains where these strategies are new or significantly underutilized.
Projects that use standard survey tools for the sole purpose of studying opinions, attitudes, beliefs, or self-reported behavior generally do not meet the criteria for support.
Application information
ISPS especially encourages early career faculty and researchers to apply for this funding, although we will give full consideration to proposals from faculty at all career stages.
The grant is designed to cover a 1 or 2-year project, with an expectation that at least one publication-quality research report will emerge within 3 years.
The proposal includes a 3-page project description, a budget, and a budget justification. The typical award is between US$5,000-10,000, and the maximum award is US$25,000.
The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2023, and we expect to update applicants on their application status by early December 2023. Proposals received after November 15, 2023 will be reviewed on a rolling basis subject to available funding.
Each proposal will be reviewed based on the soundness of the research design and the importance and innovativeness of the study given the size of the budget request. Pilot projects and projects with potential to evolve into larger collaborative studies are especially welcome. If an award is granted, some further steps, including a data archiving plan and IRB approval, must be completed before any funds are released. Applicants must be full-time Yale faculty, Postdoctoral fellows, or doctoral students enrolled in a graduate degree program in the Yale Graduate School or a Yale professional school. We especially encourage proposals from ISPS-affiliated faculty and researchers.
ISPS encourages early career faculty and researchers to apply for this funding, although we will consider proposals from faculty and researchers at all career stages.
U.S. citizenship is not required.
